Quality Control Assays

Standard quality control assays performed typically the day after isolation include dynamic glucose perifusion of islets, islet insulin/DNA content, ADP/ATP ratio and evaluation of cytokines including tissue factor, IL-6, IL-8 and MCP-1 among others.

Islets have to meet certain functional, qualitative and quantitative standards to qualify for transplants. By assessing functional capacity of islet with the glucose perifusion assay we can determine the quality of the cells prior to transplantation. This value can be used in a predictive way to measure functional islet engraftment in the immediate posttransplant period.
