Organ Transport
Organ Transport
Organ transport consists of placing the procured pancreas inside a plastic tubular net which fits snuggly inside a plastic jar. The jar is then filled with University of Wisconsin organ preservation solution and sterilely closed. The jar then is placed inside a specially constructed organ transport case filled with cooling blocks. Then, it's off to Uppsala for processing.
Organs from Uppsala and Stockholm are typically transported by car whereas remote centers use commercial flights. Transport times range between 7-12 hours.
Pancreas transport box: The pancreas ships inside the container surrounded by temperature packs. The compartment on the left is used for sending blood samples, spleen and documents associated with the organ, that is donor information, virus tests and HLA information. |
